Well, the structure has now begun to show cracks and is vulnerable to corrosion. I said previously in another post that in order to end skid row as we know it, was from within. Well, the new Green Apple Market on the corner of 5th street and Wall Street is now a force that is going to weaken the structural integrity of skid row.
The Green Apple Market has items that are sold in skid row at the other corner markets at higher cost and Green Apple Market is selling or going to be selling healthy foods at a cost lower than the corner markets in skid row , or non-existent products.
A can of chili cost 2.99 at the other markets. Whereas , a can of chili costs 1.50 at Green apple market. They even have the huge can's of chili for that price.. 3 bag box of pop weaver popcorn costs 1.25.
What this means is that many of us who used to depend on the missions to eat at , those suffering with diabetes etc, can now go to the Green Apple Market to eat healthier. The Missions do not take into account the illnesses of those in this community when they serve their meals. So many people with certain conditions such as high blood pressure , diabetes , etc, will be able to buy healthy foods at the store on the corner of 5th and Wall Street , without having to venture to Ralph's , Grand Central Market , or food 4 less.
What I am saying.
This Market will cause the residents in skid row to not rely so heavily on the missions to augment their meals , since the people here will be able to buy healthy foods they can prepare themselves. Fresh produce close by will allow us to go and graze, by which I mean walk a half a block and buy produce when we need it. As a result , the missions may well see a reduction in the numbers of skid row residents living in the hotels using their kitchens. IF this happens , we could really see how many people actually are homeless and dependent on the missions for eating. The biggest benefit is the fact we will be able to not have to venture far for healthy foods, esp on days we are homebound. When the only things we could buy were processed junk food at the other corner markets or prepared foods that were way expensive and wind up broke at the end of one week.
