In life you really know who your friends are and those who are truly who they claim to be. When the Central City East DASH bus press conference happened and the City Councilwoman thanked me publicly for my work in securing that for the community along with other residents and community members of Downtown Andy Bales was there and I asked him to take photos for me , since I knew that many of the press people would not. Enoch Magazine did an article on him and it tells us a bit more about the history of the CEO of the Union Rescue Mission.Who would know that he was fired from a job because he actually cared to take care of the poor.I am shunned because I tell the truth about what really happens in skid row. I tell how reporters , bloggers, journalists , come here and do their warm and fuzzy stories , but never follow up, never a call for action , nor do we ever hear from them again.
Andy Bales and Orlando Ward were there for me . God showed me that day who were my true friends and who were not. You may say I am being harsh. Even Eric Richardson was there and reported on the fact that I was a major player in securing the Central City East DASH bus. But not all is perfect in skid row, not all providers have the people's best interest at heart. We suffer in these hotels. My housing provider wasn't there. They are too busy intimidating us in many ways , last year it was to take the air conditioners out of our rooms and then the heat waves began and people suffered or they died.
Andy Bales is a good man and he knows that we in the community depend on the missions to look out for us. The patient dumping issue , the issue of the Medicare and Medi-cal fraud , it goes on and on. Andy has taken the Union Rescue Mission from being an isolated fortress to once again reaching out to the skid row community. HE is a true friend to many of us here esp. those of us who envision a community one day free of the drug dealers on the streets.
Galatians has a great word:
Weary not in well doing for in due season you shall reap: if you faint not.
Andy Is the epitome of that word in Galatians. Having faith that those seeds of kindness and compassion and the love of God will grow to a harvest has now even brought me back to the fold.
