Fred Jordan Mission begins it's march back to truth- 5,000 kids from Southern California Region to get name brand goodies
It has been a long time coming. Many people may not agree with the way things are reported on this blog. Last year it was said that the children of skid row would be the recipients of the name brand goods , when those of us who reside in skid row know it is not the children of skid row but many children who come from across Los Angeles to spend almost 3 nights in skid row waiting for the day that the give away happens. Below is the press release that was sent out this year. Note it says southern California Children and not skid row children. Good job. Makes me want to donate now...
It is amazing that this change in how the press releases are done is happening. The absurdity of claiming that over 5,000 children in skid row are being helped was preposterous. There are not over 5,000 children in skid row; not even over 600. Yet, the pimping of the people of skid row continued. Not this year. It is important to tell the truth of how we serve those in the Los Angeles community , esp in these tough economic times. It makes me happy and it make me proud to know that the days of using the term skid row to draw sympathy for the plight of those all over this city who find theme selves in dire straights is changing. There is such a terrible stigma with the name Skid Row that I wonder if those who are trying to serve those are really just shooting themselves in the foot when they claim the name skid row. Tomorrow will be a good day in skid row as the children of Los Angeles come to the place that was created for the purpose of centralizing these services and are served. The question now becomes : How do we do these things better.

The Los Angeles Times reported that “Thousands of children go to school in rags. The price can be ridicule by classmates… they struggle daily with a humbling consequence of poverty: inadequate clothing.”.
Yet thanks to your faithful gifts, you make it possible for us to give complete new school outfits - from head to toe - to thousands of needy children at our Back-to-School New Clothing Giveaway.
I’m writing to you today because I genuinely need your help. More needy families than ever before are coming to us for help. Families have lost jobs and homes. Parents choose between food and rent. So there is never money for new school clothes - and nearly half a million children in this city go to school in hand-me-downs and rags. However, each $25 that you give will clothe and feed one needy child. That’s why I’m asking you to prayerfully consider how many precious children you will help
