Gordon Turner and the Reps of Skid row

It was a fascinating thing to walk the streets of skid row in the middle of the night with Gordon Turner. Gordon Turner works closely with the Union Rescue Mission on the issues of Patient dumping etc. He was out walking with myself and General Jeff as a crew doing a documentary were out with myself and General Jeff as we went on a walk of the skid row area as he does and sometimes I go with him as we docment the sidewalks and the lights and just to see if everything is ok in the area.

One of the most embarrassing things was when we got to the automated public toilets. During the day they work fine , people use them for what they are used for. For some reason, late at night and early morning hours ,they become out of order. Some people manage to open the doors and just urinate onto the inside of the floor of the toilets and what we witnessed last night was one toilet out in front of the Union Rescue Mission that was out of order and as we opened the door we witnessed someone lying against the wall. I didn't see the whole scene so I don't know if that person was using drugs or just lying there sleeping.

It amazes me that the Union Rescue Mission and the Midnight Mission took photos for an article in the Downtown News with a ribbon cutting with the Councilwoman Jan Perry trying to take full credit for that toilet , yet right in front of the Union Rescue Mission that toilet is used for things that it shouldn't be or is nonoperational in the night and early morning hours. This is what the problems are . They spend their time trying to get press for funding ,and even get in a photo op for an automated public toilet

Early in the mornings as the sun comes up , jc/ decaux comes and cleans and repairs the toilets and they are operational and working the way they should be and people using them for the purpose they are intended for. But Early this morning around 2 am I was able to witness how this toilet was the home for someone and then when we walked passed it to go home no one was in it anymore. The Toilet on on 5th and San Pedro was nonoperational but the door was able to be opened part way with no one in it.

I was claiming how great Councilwoman Jan Perry was in getting these toilets , but for some reason in the early morning hours these toilets are not being maintained the way they should be in skid row. Talk about embarrassing, but I am not a politician nor am I going to deny that there is a problem and I think people should see that footage the way it comes out because I do ask the question, why is this happening right outside the walls of the Union Rescue Mission and the answer I always seem to get is that they don't care what happens right outside their front door. I don't believe that response only because I do see the URM doing the outreach with the bottled water now and are out speaking on the issues of Patient Dumping. Something has to change. IN the wealthiest country in the world we are still seeing these things happening.

By getting rid of the plastic porta potties we had the opportunity to get these automated public toilets and you would think that because you can't park them up against a wall , and you can see around it you would know what is happening around those toilets and it would make it easier to see what is actually happening and do something about it. What I have seen is everything that shouldn't be happening is actually able to be seen , yet , what is being done about it. IN other words these toilets are easy to monitor yet , they are now out of control , well, at least in the night and early morning hours.

Los Angeles Mayoral Candidate Gordon Turner visits skid row on election day

Gordon Turner does make it to skid row on this election day. He was at San Julian Park passing out flyers and speaking to voters. Some voters got excited and asked for handfuls of flyers to begin to pass out to voters on the Nickel.  Someone had passed out flyers last night , apparently, because there were already flyers all over skid row when he arrived.
