Virgen de Guadalupe makes New York Times
LA Virgen de Guadalupe Dios Inantzin is a wonderful pageant put on every year by the Latino theater Company at the Cathedral of the Angels in Downtown Los Angeles. It has run for 7 years free of charge as a gift for those who normally would never be able to purchase a ticket for a show at another venue. This was my 3rd year in the pageant. The New York Times Article starts with the story of my friend , Andrea Garcia Soto , who sings in the choir. She has always been fun to be around as we have put on the show. This year I got to know her a lot better as I was not in my usual role as a spanish soldier , but as a member of the choir. The times mentions that Andrea is suffering with cancer. She broke her foot the first night of rehearsal when I was away , but she came back to perform for both free shows at the Cathedral of the Angels.
Andrea Soto Before Friday's show
I witnessed the New York Times Reporter Thursday Evening, before the performance , as she did her job. It was the most respectful work I had ever seen. Instead of focusing on the principles , the famous actors and actresses known in the spanish speaking community from stage and screen , she focused on those who were in the choir and the pueblo. I am sure if she interviewed me - which of course she was not going to , Jose Luis had mentioned to her I was the Los Angeles Town Crier , thus she was not looking for celebrities, but those whom are the salt of the earth - she would have found out I too was there for a very special reason of my own and that was to be able to be a part of a production that tells the story of how the peasants were treated by the spanish invaders ,and their own kind as being outcasts and not worthy of god's love, because of the color of their skin. Living in a part of Downtown and suffering with the ailments I do have , I was there to remember those of us in this part of downtown whom people choose to ostracize, and we too can make a difference if we are persistent and have faith that we are all children of God.
There is a part of the story in which Juan Diego is watching as his uncle is dying. The Choir walks to the front of the stage and sings;" tata dios , tata dios , venganos tu salvacion." At both shows in the cathedral tears came out of my eyes. It was a poignant part of the play as we stood there with candles and sang that piece. I had never seen the show before. I had been in the back as a soldier and walked off and on stage whenever the the actor who played the Bishop was to do his parts. This year I saw the beauty of this play and it made me aware that there are those out there who would do wrong who will try and make me believe I am the one doing wrong.
