Denial is a funny thing. Denial is what happens when we can't see the forest for the trees. Denial is what keeps us from moving forward. Denial is what makes us stall in our tracks.
I can't sleep. I keep getting the same dream. My work is accomplished here in skid row. The major work is seeing it's seeds now sprouting a crop.
What was that work? To get skid row from being isolated. To have the residents here networking with the rest of downtown and the rest of the world.
That work involved leading by example and interacting with the rest of downtown . The newdwontown. It involved making sure the residents of skid row and the homeless had a place on the Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council. I have seen this work finally come to fruition as I see my neighbors in skid row working and networking with the rest of Downtown. They now hold prominent positions in policy making committees and have direct contact with those who can help make those changes. Having skid row isolated was not going to change anything. Skid Row was always a place to hide for those running from the law and those running from life. Now those who may have been running from life can interact with those who are living it . There is more to skid row than the mentally ill who can not fend for themselves. I am witnessing those who thought they were lost from life doing.
MY dream is a horrible dream. It reminds me that my work is done. My work was not to get credit for my work. My work was to encourage others to help themselves and inspire others to do the same. We have many leaders now in skid row. Many qualified leaders who live in the sro's and transitional housing and even on the streets. My dream tells me that the documentary being made right now is about those who have come after me making the differences and the changes. It is about my legacy not about me. It tells me that my struggles are reaping what I have sown. Now it is time to look towards the other thing I am going to do. The next level is coming. And it will be glorious. the disabled are going to fight back. We are not going to allow people to just dump us somewhere and leave us to rot. It is now about reliability not disability.
