Click the slideshow to learn more about the Union Rescue Mission and how you can help to get more water to my neighbors
I will make the distinction in my writing about those in skid row who hinder and those who help. This is a story about those who help. These are those who are making a difference. Those who are seen on the streets of skid row on a daily basis making a difference and leading by example. You will never see Anita Nelson or even Mike Alvidrez ,execuive directors respectively, of each of the two largest housing providers in skid row coming to the heart of skid row to check on their tenants on scorching days to see how they are doing. But it takes people like Andy Bales to be out on the streets following through where Anita Nelson and Mike Alvidrez fail everyday.
You can see Andy Bales out on the streets of skid row when the temperature is over 85 degrees behind a dolly full of cold chilled water pushing it himself. He can be seen with a group of people from the Union Rescue Mission actually doing the work that god commands us to do. Some may see this as something simple , but it was the good Samaritan who took care of the neighbor who fell to robbers on the road. As I have said many times. Social service providers can be the worst predators that the homeless , sick , and the weak can come across. You can see this in the way SRO builds their housing. Many of SRO tenants are out on the hot streets or in the park because it is hotter inside than out. ANDY is there for us with cool refreshing water.
[33] But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. [34] He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. [35] The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'
It says that when he returns that he will reimburse the innkeeper for any expenses he may have incurred. What does this fortell to those who are charged with managing these SRO's. That is what they are. They are management companies that manage the subsidized housing that they are being paid to look after, it isn't the housing they are charged with, it is the tenants who receive subsidies from the Housing Authority. It has been my experience that these providers don't see things that way. They are neglectful and are only concerned with the day to day of how they can acquire more grants so they can get a cut from those grants instead of looking to see that their tenants are well taken care of. It is this follow through that I wonder if it will be an expense of wrath that will be poured out on them when god returns? He says he listens to the blood that cries from the ground of those who have been wronged and have died unnecessarily . I still imagine the suffering that Cle Peters went through. And I still feel the suffering of those around me who may well be the next Cle Peters in these hotels to die in them unnecessarily.
If it wasn't for the rescue missions I wonder how bad off we would be in skid row, knowing there was no one to feed us , clothe us, and make sure when it is hot outside we have cool water. That is what service is about. It is when we go the extra mile that makes the biggest difference. Building these hotels with the proper ventilation( skid row housing trust has come to that conclusion, that cross ventilation is important and using the best materials to build with too, god bless Mike Alvidrez)is going the extra mile. Building structures that become ovens , literally, in the summer is not going the extra mile.
The Union Rescue Mission is going that extra mile.
