Knowing that the DCBID is an arm of the Central City Association it is no surprise that when counting the median income of Downtown Los Angeles the poor are not accounted for although downtown Los Angeles is the homeless capitol of the world and is the center for the most single room occupancy housing concentrated into one area. One could draw the conclusion that those who are living in single room occupancy housing are not welcome to participate in the marketing survey that was prepared recently by the Downtown Business Improvement District.
Asking Hal Bastion, the director of economic development of the DCBID , if those of us who reside in single room occupancy housing are allowed to be a part of the online survey he said yes. SO for those of us living in the sros we can fill out the survey. I was surprised that even I asked for a Trader Joe's and a gap. I even checked the bubble for a target. The best thing that could happen would be if we got an apple store downtown. Folks, this is our chance to participate and ask for the amenities we need and want downtown. Knowing that we are a huge spending population downtown because we have housing that is subsidized and many living in the hotels do not have cars and insurance etc et. From personal experience, if one was to not have frivolous spending habits there are many who have disposable monthly incomes in the range of between 400 and 600 dollars and even more. We spend money downtown. IN tough economic times it is those retirees on Social Security Disability and those who get the full SSI payment and those on Veterans pensions and disability pensions who will be those spending their money downtown on a regular basis.
On a good note and sour note; my grandfather who lived during the great depression received a reservist check from the navy . He supported many families during that tough time. It saved many of the surrounding ranches from having to sell their property to survive. SO folks, don't count us out if that little anecdote is any indication of who will be helping to keep many of our businesses downtown afloat with their spending. Fill out the survey...
