Deon Joseph and assistant los angeles city attorney Gordon Turner provide a woman's night out for women living in skid row

November 14, 2008

To all,

Although it was the same night as Downtown Art Walk, there was an equally, if not more important event held in the heart of Skid Row last night.

Simply titled "Ladies Night", it was anything but simple as ALL of Skid Row's women were invited to a women's-only function that included presentations focusing on topics such as victims of domestic violence issues, laws that help to protect helpless women and there was also a special presentation of self-defense martial arts that was well-received by the women in attendance.

This wonderful, yet needed event was produced by Senior Lead Officer Deon Joseph from Central Division, L.A.P.D.

His efforts to invite as many women in Skid Row as possible were endless, oftentimes running out of his self-made flyers promoting the event.

Reports estimate that nearly 175 women were able to attend this historic event. There were many rumored complaints prior to the event from women that resided in facilities with strict housing rules that were unable to attend, suggesting that the number of women in attendance could have increased greatly. The event started at 6 p.m. and by the time it was scheduled to be over, those women would have jeapordized losing what housing they did have with many of them staying in local missions and shelters. No repeat event dates were announced even though there were several suggestions to do so because the women felt that an event with such important information should be heard by more women, even those not living in Skid Row.

Other speakers besides S.L.O. Joseph included, Gordon Turner, Deputy City Attorney who focused on the laws that women should know, encouraging them to see a complaint all the way through if ever involved in a domestic situation, Officer Cleon Joseph, S.L.O. Joseph's twin brother, gave a physical presentation which included several martial arts techniques that focused on aiding females with self-defense skills to use if ever under attack. This segment was well received by the entire room and could have easily extended, but due to time constraints had to end sooner than should have. Detective Paula Garcia addressed various topics that included sex crimes, restraining orders and more.

Also, S.R.O. and the Midnight Mission also partnered in the event by providing the James Wood Community Center and ordering Domino's Pizza for all the ladies in attendance to take one entire pizza each.

Overall, This was one of the best events ever held in Skid Row and it could not have come at a better time. With more and more women coming to Skid Row in recent months and with the two-year anniversary of the Safer Cities Initiative( S.C.I.) looming, it's good to see Central Division and L.A.P.D. taking the initiative regarding a subject that is so important to the very citizen's that they swore to protect.

Again, props to S.L.O. Joseph and the other panelists that made so many women in Skid Row feel "cared about" and "protected", which is what one woman named "Robin" stated to me after the event was over, even if it was for only one day. Afterall, we have to start somewhere. Why not Skid Row?

For my dear friend Richard Feagin - Sifu Richard Feagin

For some odd reason when I heard news that my childhood friend was killed in a car accident I thought of another friend we used to get together with and sing this song and others. We were all a bunch of christian rednecks. Didn't drink , smoke, use drugs and searching for wives and not whoring around. Richard Feagin introduced me to the world of anime. HE went on to beome a master karate instructor. Who would have thought. He was a close friend that helped me work out lot's of questions I had in puberty. Girls and all that. Kept us out of trouble to be two guys who were waiting for the right girl to marry. HE leaves two young children and a beautiful wife. None of the renditions of this song on the internet even come close to the ozark type of twang we used. I can still sing like that. Raised on that Southern Baptist Gospel Music. I will give alist of my favorites. We used the banjo a lot. This is not my home On the wings of a dove- this is the version I remember growing u...

Los Angeles Mayoral Candidate Gordon Turner visits skid row on election day

Gordon Turner does make it to skid row on this election day. He was at San Julian Park passing out flyers and speaking to voters. Some voters got excited and asked for handfuls of flyers to begin to pass out to voters on the Nickel.  Someone had passed out flyers last night , apparently, because there were already flyers all over skid row when he arrived.

To those who think that Marijuana has never killed anyone

Update: once again marijuana used by sexual deviants to assault young teenagers who skipped school. When officers arrived, the men were gone, he said. "It looks like this house was not lived in," Taylor said. The girls told police they met the men at the Paseo Colorado mall on Colorado Boulevard, where they were playing hooky from school, he said. The men then invited the girls to the Idaho Street house, he added. Once there, the men brought out alcohol and marijuana and gave it to the 14-year-olds before sexually assaulting them, he said. Marijuana is addictive and it is also plain fun for many young people . John Wayne Gacy used MArijuana to lure young men into his home Jeffrey Dahmer used marijuana to lure young men he killed into his home Jaime Green, who lives at the Southern Hotel operated by SRO HOusing Corporation, uses his medical marijauna to lure young males to his room to molest them...and he is a registered sex offender that has to register e...
